Dawn 2002

I kept my hours 1 - 4.30, I had a long leash eventually

and made full use of it,

which was the gutter edging my balcony

slowly filling with cig ends,

until they vanished, no questions.

I'd cap my early mornings glaring at the modem

wondering what horrors had already been set free

knowing this other inchoate world

would never seem expedient,

that a song downloaded in 45 mins

would only move me for the trial,

that I had to keep going until

4.30 and clap hands once, enough,

smoke winsomely

on the balcony, enjoy

the curly tails spiralling

into the slowly blooming

layer between the hedgerows

and the blotted vapours

high above.
