Like a Diamond

The past hold little glimmer in your eyes
All those dead things
Floating up to the surface
You don't understand my necrophilic wonder
Holding our history up to the light
Oh, the refractions on the walls we've painted
Reliving that moment you floated me
Across the floor of the Korean bar
You kept eyes on me, I kept mine on you
You don't undertand why
I spend time learning old tongues
Oh, the joy of hearing cognates in my mouth

December 26, 2021

her birth was one of trauma
resulting in a too-soon-poop
swallowed
it's name: meconium aspiration syndrome
or so i think
but what do i know about babies
or birthing them
this baby's pictures feature
a respirator and a specially sized tube up her nose,
her oddly big baby nose
she has the goldilocks of noses,
with a breathing tube just right
we were crying until
that nose
a doctor said
my, my, what a nose

Gold Run

Time equals mood I measure one
spell of mood as I measure your one good eye
though I can't assume to know what is
your good eye both of mine are bad so bad
I almost went headlong into the J train stanchion
at Bushwick and Myrtle I was so sad then driving
round in the dark not knowing how depression
dulls the senses a mole in a Saab, subterranean,
my sight failing with the sigh of folding stanchion
a boxer drawn down to one knee wondering
for how long should one remain between both states
before some friendly umpire calls it

FRIEND MEMORIES

My mother at the kitchen table, tethered

to the twisty phone cord, tethered to her friends,

Smoking, laughing, so many words to listen to,

so much to say.

winding myself around her legs at first,

soaking in her habits.

Eventually a cordless phone let her wander

through the garden where i watched from afar,

Repelled by the smoke, attracted to the laughter.
